CHICKEN Song
Lyrics:
Oh, C, that's the way it begins
Oh, H, that's the second letter in
I, I am the third
Oh, C, that's the fourth letter in this word
Oh, K, I'm fillin' in
E, I'm near the end
Oh, C H I C K E N - that am the way to spell Chicken.
Oh, Rufus, Rastus, Johnson Brown
Whatcha gonna do when the rent comes round?
Whatcha gonna say, whatcha gonna pay,
Whatcha gonna do no the judgment day?
Oh, you know, I know, rent means dough.
Landlord'll throw you out in the snow.
Oh, Rufus, Rastus, Johnson Brown
Whatcha gonna go when the rent comes round?
Oh, H, that's the second letter in
I, I am the third
Oh, C, that's the fourth letter in this word
Oh, K, I'm fillin' in
E, I'm near the end
Oh, C H I C K E N - that am the way to spell Chicken.
Oh, Rufus, Rastus, Johnson Brown
Whatcha gonna do when the rent comes round?
Whatcha gonna say, whatcha gonna pay,
Whatcha gonna do no the judgment day?
Oh, you know, I know, rent means dough.
Landlord'll throw you out in the snow.
Oh, Rufus, Rastus, Johnson Brown
Whatcha gonna go when the rent comes round?

One of the songs we always sang with my mother growing up was
CHICKEN. Whenever the family would get together, Mama would
always start this "round". The first verse we always sang
together, then some would split off on the second time through and
sing the Rufus Rastus verse while others repeated the first verse.
It was a lot of fun.
This was the last thing Mama heard from her kids. As she was taking her last few breaths, my brother leaned into her ear and started the song. My sis and I joined in and we finished it together while holding her hand, and stroking her hair. As soon as we finished the song.... she went to her heavenly home.

In the version I learned from my grandfather in the 1950’s the fourth line is C that’s the seasoning of
the bird. It nicely rhymes with the previously and is a charming play of words C vs seasoning.
I was told it was an old minstrel song,
